SUMMARY:Nanostructured electrodes: Atomically precise synthesis of metal nanoparticles for electrocatalysis. - (Lucy Gloag / LPCNO / Seminar). – 11/09/2025\, 14H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPCNO \nLucy Gloag Research School of Chemistry\, Australian National University\, Canberra \n GP seminar room\, INSA\, Build. 27\, Room 2.20 (2nd floor left)\n \n  \nSummary\nDeveloping improved\, low-cost electrode materials is essential to produce cleaner\, more affordable\, and more reliable hydrogen fuel for energy conversion and storage technologies. While much research has focused on catalysts\, support materials\, which are critical for managing reactant\, product\, and electron flow\, have been largely overlooked. This talk presents chemical syntheses for nanoscale metal structures that can achieve up to 1000 times greater efficiency than current support materials. By growing metal cores and branches in a stepwise manner\, these interconnected structures achieve tailored configurations optimised for energy storage. They feature high surface area\, excellent conductivity\, and chemically tunable surfaces\, making them ideal electrocatalyst supports. The talk also explores strategies for enhancing catalytic surfaces: (i) shaping nanoparticles to expose specific facets and improve stability\, (ii) decorating them with a second metal to form strained\, active islands\, and (iii) dispersing metals to create single-atom catalysts resistant to CO poisoning. These advances enable precise structural control for enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

SUMMARY:From Heat to Electrons: Nickel–Ceria Interfaces in Thermo- and Electro-Catalysis for CO₂ Conversion. - (Spiros Zafeiratos / LPCNO / Seminar). – 18/09/2025\, 14H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPCNO \nSpiros Zafeiratos ICPEES\, Strasbourg \n GP seminar room\, INSA\, Build. 27\, Room 2.20 (2nd floor left)\n \n  \nSummary\nNickel–ceria compounds are widely studied for their role in CO₂ conversion technologies\, spanning both thermocatalytic and electrochemical applications. This presentation provides an overview of Ni–CeO₂ catalysts and cermets\, focusing on their surface chemistry\, redox behavior\, and catalytic performance under relevant operating conditions. Based on our recent studies [1–7]\, the talk will cover the synthesis of Ni-doped ceria nanoparticles\, the influence of doping on surface reducibility\, and the structural evolution of Ni–Ce interfaces under thermal treatment and CO₂ methanation conditions. In the context of electrochemical applications\, the presentation will address Ni–CeO₂-based electrodes (cermets) for CO₂ and steam electrolysis\, with emphasis on operando investigations of surface oxidation\, electrochemical response\, and interface stability. Particular attention is given to the role of surface states\, oxygen vacancies\, and metal–support interactions in governing activity and long-term performance. By combining insights from both thermal and electrochemical perspectives\, this work aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of Ni–CeO₂ interface behavior to support the design of more robust and efficient materials for CO₂ conversion and energy-related applications.
