SUMMARY:Instabilities and Geometry of Growing Tissues. - (Doron Grossman / LPT / Seminar). - 07/11/2023\, 14 H.
DESCRIPTION:Doron Grossman (LPT) \nSeminar LPT\, 7/11/2023\, 14H\, 3R1\, seminar room\, 3rd floor \nSummary :\nWe present a covariant continuum formulation of a generalized two-dimensional vertexlike model of epithelial tissues which describes tissues with different underlying geometries\, and allows for an analytical macroscopic description. Using a geometrical approach and out-of-equilibrium statistical mechanics\, we calculate both mechanical and dynamical instabilities of a tissue\, and their dependencies on various variables\, including activity\, and cell-shape heterogeneity (disorder). We show how both plastic cellular rearrangements and the tissue elastic response depend on the existence of mechanical residual stresses at the cellular level. Even freely growing tissues may exhibit a growth instability depending on the intrinsic proliferation rate. Our main result is an explicit calculation of the cell pressure in a homeostatic state of a confined growing tissue. We show that the homeostatic pressure can be negative and depends on the existence of mechanical residual stresses. This geometric model allows us to sort out elastic and plastic effects in a growing\, flowing\, tissue. We calculate the rheological response of such a living tissue\, and show that it can exhibit shear thinning\, shear thickening and thixotropic behaviour\, depending on the condition.

SUMMARY:Physique et finances II. - (Mohamed Belkacem / LPT / Seminar). - 14/11/2023\, 14 H.
DESCRIPTION:Mohamed Belkacem (LPT) \nSeminar LPT\, 14/11/2023\, 14H\, 3R1\, seminar room\, 3rd floor \nSummary :\nIn this presentation\, I will talk about my experience in the financial sector. After reviewing some aspects of the financial markets\, I will focus on the areas where a physicist (or a mathematician) can make use of his/her scientific skills to help develop tools and instruments useful for the financial sector users. Among the various skills\, I will briefly talk about how stochastic differential equations are used for predicting future price distributions (for derivatives pricing and risk management). Joint distribution functions and correlations are also aspects widely used to manage portfolios. Moreover\, expertise in the various types of regression (linear and non-linear parametric regression\, non-parametric regression) and optimization (brute force\, simplex\, annealing\, genetic algorithms\, etc) is used to construct efficient and robust portfolios as well as in developing and testing trading strategies. I will end my talk by presenting two of the tools applied during my stay\, a trading strategy based on the concept of auto-correlations and a risk management process using the concept of entropy and number of independent bets.

SUMMARY:Theory days on Advances in Stochastic and Dissipative Effects. - (Meeting / LPT)\, 29/11/2023 - 1/12/2023
DESCRIPTION:Organizers : P. M. Dinh\, A. de la Lande\, and E. Suraud \nAim and objectives\nFollowing the tradition of the previous successful meetings that have started in 2009\, the Theory Days workshop aims at stimulating constructive discussions\, collaborations\, and knowledge exchange among a selected group of theoreticians. This year\, the fifteenth edition will be dedicated to Advances in Stochastic and Dissipative Effects in real-time dynamics and in ferminionic systems \nThe typical physical situations we aim at describing concern in particular the irradiation of clusters and molecules by extreme light. By extreme light\, we mean in particular high intensity lasers for which energy deposit is known to be especially important. But other « extreme » light sources such as FEL or attosecond lasers certainly also constitute highly interesting cases to explore. Real-time dynamics simulation is a valuable resource to the chemical and physical communities\, since it allows for direct mimicking of numerous time-domain experiments and provides a detailed atomistic description of chemical and physical processes and interactions. However\, to make the simulation feasible one has to recur to some approximations\, on which the accuracy of the results rely. We will focus on how to reproduce realistic situations such as photodissociation or multi-ionization within state-of-the-art methodologies such as Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory (TDDFT). Attention will be paid to the failures of the current approximations and on how to improve. Approaches beyond TDDFT\, such as Time-Dependent Density Matrix\, stochastic TDDFT\, Trajectory Surface Hopping\, Exact factorization and Open Quantum System methods will be also discussed. \nWe plan to gather people from various groups working in this domain\, mostly in western Europe. The workshop is intended to be a working forum\, thus rather informal. The format will consist in a series of long detailed talks\, typically 1 hour (40 mn talk + 10 mn for questions) focusing in particular on ongoing problems and open issues. We thus urge participants to prepare their talks in this spirit. Ultimately a most efficient organization would consist in having a limited number of talks per representative group in order to avoid doublings. \nMore informations Here : Theory Days 2023
