DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LCAR \nEszter Dudas (LCAR) \nAbstract:\nHow can we decipher the chemical composition and structure of exoplanetary atmospheres from a laboratory on Earth?\nUnderstanding these distant worlds is one of the greatest challenges in modern astrophysics. The SMAUG experimental system has been developed to provide unprecedented high-temperature infrared spectroscopic reference data that will enhance the detection of new molecules and refine atmospheric models of Hot Jupiters and other exoplanets. Using a specially designed Laval nozzle and high-enthalpy source coupled with cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS)\, SMAUG produces high-resolution spectra of polyatomic molecules under extreme conditions.\nBy operating in both hypersonic jet and post-shock regimes\, we obtain unique insights into non-LTE and LTE spectral signatures\, crucial for improving theoretical models and synthetic spectra

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire du CEMES \nJérémie Teyssier (QMP – Université de Genève) \nSeminar CEMES\, 17/04/2025\, 11H\, salle de conférence \nRésumé :\nNous avons conçu un système innovant capable de mesurer simultanément deux types de signaux optiques : la réponse Raman et la génération de seconde harmonique\, le tout à l’échelle microscopique et avec une précision extrême. Pour y parvenir\, nous avons entièrement automatisé notre spectromètre\, ce qui a considérablement amélioré la qualité des données obtenues. \nAu-delà des avancées techniques\, nous partagerons les bonnes (et les mauvaises !) pratiques pour réussir une mesure Raman. Nous montrerons aussi comment un spectromètre Raman peut servir non seulement d’outil d’analyse\, mais aussi de four et de sonde thermométrique. Grâce à cette approche unique\, il devient possible d’étudier des phénomènes physiques complexes\, comme les transitions de phase et les brisures de symétrie dans les matériaux ferroélectriques\, sans nécessiter de four externe. Notre système permet ainsi d’explorer des températures extrêmes\, allant jusqu’à 2000°C\, avec une précision inégalée. \nNous illustrerons le potentiel de cet instrument à travers divers exemples d’application comme les nickelates de terres rares\, les matériaux multiferroïques\, les matériaux 2D\, et quelques premières mesures en biologie. \nEnfin\, nous évoquerons les développements brevetés issus de ce projet et les étapes en cours pour transformer cette technologie en un produit commercialisable. \nhttps://dqmp.unige.ch/news/jeremie-teyssier-and-volodymyr-multian-received-an-innogap-grant/

DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPT \nNir Gov (Institut Weizmann des Sciences) \nSeminar LPT\, 29/04/2025\, 14H\, 3R4\, salle de conférence\n\nSummary :\nHow animals make decisions on where to go ? how animal groups make such collective decisions ? We present a spin-based model for how animal groups and single animals make navigational decisions on their direction and speed. The model describes motion that is diffusive in the disordered phase\, and run-and-tumble in the ordered phase. The model predicts a series of trajectories and a hierarchy of bifurcations in the presence of multiple identical targets. The geometry of these bifurcations is affected by the angular dependence of the interactions between the spins that represent the different targets. These predictions are compared to observations in different animal species. This model presents a new approach to decision-making in animals on the move\, and as a new class of deciding-active matter.\nWe then extend this model to describe abstract decision-making in the brain\, and show that its an extension of the well-known Drift-Diffusion Model (DDM) for decision-making. Specifically\, we propose that near the critical regime of the order-disorder transition the dynamics have a run-and-tumble nature which endows the decision-making with certain advantages. Comparing to experiments on humans\, we provide evidence that support the conclusion that the decision-making circuit in the brain indeed resides near this transition line
