SUMMARY:NOFT: Une méthode efficace pour les fortes corrélations. - (Ion Mitxelena / LPT / Seminar). - 2/09/2025\, 14H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPT \nIon Mitxelena (Université du Pays basque) \nSeminar LPT\, 2/09/2025\, 14H\, 3R4\, salle de conférence \nSummary :\nSince the non-relativistic Hamiltonian operator contains only one- and two-electron operators\, the energy of an electron system in the non-relativistic Born-Oppenheimer approximation can be determined exactly from the knowledge of the one- and two-particle reduced density matrices (1- and 2-RDMs)\, much simpler objects than the wavefunction. Accordingly\, one can employ the exact functional with an approximate 2-RDM that is built from the 1-RDM using a reconstruction functional. The major advantage of a 1-RDM formulation is that the kinetic energy is explicitly constructed and does not require a functional\, in contrast to DFT. \nThe 1-RDM functional is called Natural Orbital Functional (NOF) [1\,2] when it is based upon the spectral expansion of the 1-RDM. In this presentation\, the theory behind the NOFT based approximations\, PNOF5\, PNOF7\, and GNOF\, is outlined\, and some challenging examples are\npresented. Special emphasis is put on strong correlation problems [3]\, where the latter offer an interesting alternative to CASSCF and CASPT2 approaches since the selection of an active space is not required. Recent calculations are presented to illustrate the performance of the aforementioned methods. \nLastly\, we present DoNOF [4]\, the first publicly available open-source software to run NOF calculations\, as well as its current capabilities and limits from both computational and accuracy perspectives. \n[1] M. SUMMARY:Simulation de systèmes de matière condensée avec des ordinateurs quantiques. - (Lex Kemper / LPT / Seminar). - 5/09/2025\, 11H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPT \nLex Kemper (Université d’État de Caroline du Nord) \nSeminar LPT\, 5/09/2025\, 11H\, 3R4\, salle de conférence \nSummary \nIn this talk\, I’ll present our recent advances in using quantum computers to simulate condensed matter systems\, focusing on spectroscopic experiments in and out of equilibrium. \nFirst\, I’ll introduce a linear response framework that directly connects experimental observables to quantum many-body states by computing bosonic and fermionic correlation functions on a quantum computer. Unlike prior methods\, our approach supports multiple operators in a single circuit\, enabling efficient and simultaneous extraction of various correlation functions without extra ancilla qubits. We demonstrate this on a charge-density-wave material using IBM’s ibm_auckland device\, showing robust results even on noisy hardware. This method streamlines spectroscopic simulations and opens new directions for improving classical approaches. \nSecond\, I’ll discuss simulating open quantum systems on noisy quantum hardware. We find that such systems are surprisingly robust to hardware errors—even with deep circuits—making them promising candidates for near-term simulations. \nTogether\, this work demonstrates the feasibility and promise of quantum simulation for both equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena in complex materials.

SUMMARY:Nanostructured electrodes: Atomically precise synthesis of metal nanoparticles for electrocatalysis. - (Lucy Gloag / LPCNO / Seminar). – 11/09/2025\, 14H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPCNO \nLucy Gloag Research School of Chemistry\, Australian National University\, Canberra \n GP seminar room\, INSA\, Build. 27\, Room 2.20 (2nd floor left)\n \n  \nSummary\nDeveloping improved\, low-cost electrode materials is essential to produce cleaner\, more affordable\, and more reliable hydrogen fuel for energy conversion and storage technologies. While much research has focused on catalysts\, support materials\, which are critical for managing reactant\, product\, and electron flow\, have been largely overlooked. This talk presents chemical syntheses for nanoscale metal structures that can achieve up to 1000 times greater efficiency than current support materials. By growing metal cores and branches in a stepwise manner\, these interconnected structures achieve tailored configurations optimised for energy storage. They feature high surface area\, excellent conductivity\, and chemically tunable surfaces\, making them ideal electrocatalyst supports. The talk also explores strategies for enhancing catalytic surfaces: (i) shaping nanoparticles to expose specific facets and improve stability\, (ii) decorating them with a second metal to form strained\, active islands\, and (iii) dispersing metals to create single-atom catalysts resistant to CO poisoning. These advances enable precise structural control for enhanced electrocatalytic performance.

SUMMARY:Extracting Subleading Asymptotics from Finite-Size Scaling in One-Dimensional Quantum Liquids. - (Oleksandr Gamayun / LPT / Seminar). - 16/09/2025\, 14H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPT \nOleksandr Gamayun (London Institute for Mathematical Sciences) \nSeminar LPT\, 16/09/2025\, 14H\, 3R4\, salle de conférence \nSummary\nThe hydrodynamic framework of Luttinger liquid theory conventionally describes one-dimensional quantum liquids of bosons\, fermions\, and spins. This approach predicts power-law asymptotic behavior of the correlation functions with the exponents governed by the dimensionless Luttinger parameter and determined by the thermodynamic properties of the system. While the universal exponents are well understood\, the non-universal prefactors can be computed through finite-size scaling of form factors (matrix elements). In this talk\, I present a method that goes further\, enabling the extraction of subleading asymptotic behavior directly from the full finite-size dependence of form factors. My primary example will be the tau function in the context of one-dimensional impenetrable bosons.

SUMMARY:From Heat to Electrons: Nickel–Ceria Interfaces in Thermo- and Electro-Catalysis for CO₂ Conversion. - (Spiros Zafeiratos / LPCNO / Seminar). – 18/09/2025\, 14H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire LPCNO \nSpiros Zafeiratos ICPEES\, Strasbourg \n GP seminar room\, INSA\, Build. 27\, Room 2.20 (2nd floor left)\n \n  \nSummary\nNickel–ceria compounds are widely studied for their role in CO₂ conversion technologies\, spanning both thermocatalytic and electrochemical applications. This presentation provides an overview of Ni–CeO₂ catalysts and cermets\, focusing on their surface chemistry\, redox behavior\, and catalytic performance under relevant operating conditions. Based on our recent studies [1–7]\, the talk will cover the synthesis of Ni-doped ceria nanoparticles\, the influence of doping on surface reducibility\, and the structural evolution of Ni–Ce interfaces under thermal treatment and CO₂ methanation conditions. In the context of electrochemical applications\, the presentation will address Ni–CeO₂-based electrodes (cermets) for CO₂ and steam electrolysis\, with emphasis on operando investigations of surface oxidation\, electrochemical response\, and interface stability. Particular attention is given to the role of surface states\, oxygen vacancies\, and metal–support interactions in governing activity and long-term performance. By combining insights from both thermal and electrochemical perspectives\, this work aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of Ni–CeO₂ interface behavior to support the design of more robust and efficient materials for CO₂ conversion and energy-related applications.

SUMMARY:DNA technologies to optically enhance or detect single molecules. - (Immanuel BLOCH / Seminar/ SFP). - 19/09/2025\, 11H
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire SFP \nSébastien BIDAULT\, Institut Langevin\, Salle de séminaire\, Bât. 3R1\, 3ème étage \nSummary: \nAffiche presentation séminaire SFP\, S. BIDAULT\nThe ability to monitor single molecules or biomolecules with light is at the heart of numerous technologies ranging from diagnostic tools in biotechnology to single-photon sources in quantum technologies. However\, single molecules interact extremely weakly with optical electromagnetic fields: a fluorescent molecule resonantly interacts with less than one in a million photons that are focused on it\, while\, for a typical biomolecule\, this value drops by a further 6 orders of magnitude. Using natural and artificial DNA strands that are programmed to self-assemble into well-defined nanoscale architectures\, and in conjunction with gold nanoparticles\, we craft complex hybrid nanostructures that are capable of enhancing the fluorescence of single molecules by several orders of magnitude or of translating the detection of single DNA strands into macroscopic color changes. These architectures open exciting perspectives for the development of new biosensing strategies with single molecule sensitivity\, as well as for the study of coherent interactions between light and single quantum emitters at room temperature.
