Le revers de la m\u00e9daille est que ces m\u00e9taux ne se mettent pas en forme facilement, comme on peut le faire avec l\u2019aluminium ou l\u2019acier par exemple. Cette fragilit\u00e9 vient de leur structure cristalline hexagonale qui impose aux dislocations (source de mall\u00e9abilit\u00e9) un nombre limit\u00e9 de plans atomiques dans lesquels elles peuvent se d\u00e9placer facilement. Pour d\u00e9former une t\u00f4le en Titane, pour faire un mus\u00e9e d\u2019art moderne \u00e0 Bilbao, par exemple, plusieurs approches sont possibles. Au niveau atomique, on peut modifier l\u2019environnement chimique par des \u00e9l\u00e9ments d\u2019alliage pour rendre les dislocations plus mobiles. Mais on peut aussi intervenir \u00e0 des \u00e9chelles plus grandes: au niveau des grains qui constituent la t\u00f4le et \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on dont ils sont agenc\u00e9s, ce qui constitue une \u00e9chelle encore sup\u00e9rieure.
