Sumary :
Cuprate high temperature superconductors occupy a unique position in the study of quantum materials. On one hand, being extensively studied and having the highest superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure, they are benchmark materials that quantum simulators aim to model and to which newly discovered quantum materials and superconductors are referenced against. On the other hand, they remain an unsolved problem, with major aspects of the fundamental physics of the cuprates not yet understood. Amongst these challenges is a rich competition that occurs between superconductivity and other ordered phases, including charge density wave and nematic orders. How these orders manifest and couple plays a key role in understanding important differences between various cuprate materials.

In this talk, I will briefly review cuprate high temperature superconductors. I will then discuss how we can use an advanced x-ray diffraction technique, resonant x-ray scattering, to measure charge density wave and nematic orders in the (La,M)2CuO4 family of cuprate superconductors. These measurements demonstrate orbital/nematic order is coupled to but distinct from CDW order and is associated with the enigmatic pseudogap phase of the cuprates.
